The "Unfair" Advantage: How a Designer Launched a Delicious Mission with Pistakio

What's the impact that thoughtful branding and community had around your launch?

I believe that our branding is the reason that many people give our product a chance and try it for the first time. it’s the first step to building our customers before they even try the product so it’s been incredibly impactful. we know for a fact that once people try Pistakio, they are hoooooked. it’s getting them to try it in the first place that can be hard. our branding is unique & speaks to who we are as people - which is a huge connector for customers. we hate the idea of pistachios being premium, luxurious & used only for special occasions so we found a niche and made pistachios the opposite - fun, approachable, & accessible for everyday meals. our nonno is a symbol of that humbleness and an ode to the Italian lifestyle centered around community, good relationships, & good food. nowadays, i believe that people are sick of the “grind” type of lifestyle & want to prioritize their values. our little indulgence brings a little pleasure to everyone who gets their hands on it :)

As a Graphic Designer turn CPG Startup what is a your unfair advantage?

Having your branding from the get-go is sooooo uncommon. we’re extremely lucky that we were able to nail this down right away and not have to invest tons of money on it before even starting (just a website is crazy expensive). we started super scrappy putting $1,000 each into the company to buy our first round of ingredients & bootstrapping everything as we went along. our first set of labels, stickers, & flyers were made using our college printers. without our branding, direction, or messaging, it’s really hard to express who we are visually and what we stand for.

Why people should try Pistakio and what was the mission?

It may be slightly biased, but pistachios are the most delicious, beautiful, & versatile nut. yet, they are the only nut that is always eaten as a snack and considered as something premium and luxurious that only wealthy people can afford. we want to break that stigma and are on a mission to make pistachios more fun and approachable. something one spoon away from your favorite meal, not something only used on special occasions. we’re 100% Italian inspired and founded and we were so sick of either never finding pistachios aside from the snack, or finding imported products that were artificial-tasting, overly sweet, or just plain bad. we hope to bring a little bit of Italian culture into the US through our spreads and make pistachio lovers finally happy!!
